12 best AS Roma kits: greatest ever Giallorossi shirts

Beautiful things have come from Rome since the dawn of civilisation. Clearly, AS Roma kits fit that trend.
Blessed with an incredible colour palette, the club from the Italian capital always delivers when it comes to shirt releases.
With the Lupa Capitolina on the chest, each design oozes class and sophistication. It helps when you have players like Francesco Totti to show them off too.
Wolves, lightning, fire, mosaics. Roma shirts have had a little bit of everything, and they’re all special in their own way.
Strap on your sandals, we’re going for a short stroll through the Roman Empire.
12. 2020/21 Away

Part of a fairly average season by AS Roma’s standards, this shirt only managed to make a Europa League semi and 7th in Serie A.
Smalling, Mkhitaryan, Pedro, Mancini, Veretout and El Sharaawy were the latest signings, with Borja Mayoral on loan from Real Madrid becoming the top scorer.
This was the shirt which experienced a 6-2 thumping at Old Trafford, but don’t hold that against it. It’s still beautiful.
The Lupetto badge is incredible, with off-white and maroon club colours working effortlessly across a neat Nike polo design. A modern classic.
11. 2002/03 European

We step into the dimension where Totti roams free under the guidance of Capello but again, not an overly successful season for Roma.
Some of the finest kits have been produced by Kappa, the ‘slim fit’ era is somewhat legendary in the Italian game.
We’ve picked out the European edition from this season, a subtle change from the orange-trimmed home shirt.
It switches out to dark maroon on the body and adds orange sleeves with black detailing. It’s an incredible mix, worthy of the Champions League.
10. 2022/23 Home

Finishing 6th in the league, runners-up in the Europa League and reaching a QF in the Coppa Italia. Are we sensing a theme around Roma’s recent misfortunes?
Paulo Dybala didn’t arrive at the Stadio Olimpico quietly, as you’ll remember from his unveiling parade. This shirt added to the pomp and ceremony.
The club only had two seasons with technical partners New Balance, but this home kit is by far the best of the small bunch.
A subtle half-and-half covered in a criss-cross pattern which includes 1930’s circular Roma badges. Never mind the pitch, this is worthy of Italian Fashion Week.
9. 2019/20 Third

Another average season on the pitch, eclipsed by a wonderful trio of AS Roma kits. Honestly, we haven’t seen many better home, away and third sets.
The Bosnian hitman Edin Džeko was the main goal threat, bagging 19 in all competitions. A total of 18 squad members would chip in overall.
Worn predominantly during European competition, this navy blue third shirt is inspired by Roma’s 1991/92 classic (more on that later).
Yellow and maroon touches add to the look, with a heritage Nike logo and an ASR repeat pattern completing the incredible package.
8. 1992-94 Home

Time to head back to the ‘90s. And as we all know, that’s never a wasted trip when it comes to football shirt design.
Aldair, Siniša Mihajlović, Claudio Caniggia and of course, a young prodigy in the form of Francesco Totti. This was an exciting time for AS Roma.
A little wrap over collar, three stripes on the shoulders and the inevitable Roma colour palette. There isn’t much to it, yet it’s so perfect in its simplicity.
This shirt was recreated (superbly) for the 2023/24 season, but we’re including the original in our ranking. It’s the OG and it’s beautiful.
7. 2023/24 Third

Rarely does a recent release break into an all-time ranking, but the hype around Roma’s third shirt for 2023/24 is too much to ignore.
Managerial icon José Mourinho is still kicking around the Stadio Olimpico, but he’s got his work cut out to take AS Roma back to the top of Serie A.
The Lupetto badge holds court on this plain black design, backed up by the phenomenal use of Roman mosaic sleeve ends. Roma-themed adidas stripes too? Oof.
It plays a big part in an excellent trio, and this third jersey is sure to be a future classic.
6. 1978-80 Away

Finally, it was a Coppa Italia win for the Giallorossi fans to celebrate in 1979/80. Carlo Ancelotti would score the deciding penalty. History.
Made by Pouchain Sportswear (modern remake, pictured) this shirt has gone down as an icon in the Roman club’s design portfolio.
White shirts x Roma often deliver a smart result. Top them off with Roma colours across the shoulders and sleeves, then you’re on to a winning combination.
The Lupetto badge works everywhere it goes, and you can even grab a cycling jersey version of this classic. If you fancy, that is.
5. 2001/02 Cup

When you think back to this period of AS Roma’s history, you’re going to be picturing South American legends in skin-tight shirts. Fact.
A raft of players from Argentina and Brazil helped Roma to play exciting football in 2001/02. You may remember Cafu, Batistuta, Aldair, Samuel, Emerson, Assunção and Lima.
Whilst it wasn’t a successful UCL campaign, we’ve picked out the European home shirt. This is a half-and-half Kappa classic.
The navy details help to combine Roma’s full mix of colours, and the alternate sleeves are excellent. Balanced and exquisite, a bit like Cafu.
4. 1994/95 Away

Picture this, Totti with untied laces dangling across his chest. Majestic, yes? Correct. It’s time for a chunky slice of retro kit design thanks to Asics.
Forget Dybala. Rome’s Argentine connection goes way back to the ‘90s, with Abel Balbo slotting away 22 chances during the 1994/95 season.
I Galliorossi’s palette is shown in all its glory, on a clean white base. A midriff band and cuffs back up the minimalist Lupetto badge. Lace up collar, wonderful.
This is a super fun shirt that uses ideas which we’ll likely never see again.
3. 1991/92 Third

We told you we’d be back to talk about this. The inspiration for the amazing 2019/20 third, the original is a class above.
In a season where goals were hard to come by, German legend Rudi Völler mustered 7 league goals and came out top of the charts for Roma.
Barilla is one of those sponsors which will always hold legendary status. Couple it with the adidas Trefoil logo, and you’re always going to love what happens.
Navy base with maroon and yellow sleeve stripes, the layout is beautifully balanced. Lupetto, Barilla, adidas Originals. All simple, all clean.
2. 1998/99 Home

Inject some quintessential Roma into your veins. The Stadio Olimpico has seen plenty of amazing home shirts in its time, but this is up there.
In a hit and miss season, club hero Totti pulled the strings and Delvecchio hit the net. Zeman’s 4-3-3 formation meant they scored 69 goals in Serie A, but conceded 49 too.
It feels right to hear that the original was lovingly crafted by Italian sportswear company, Diadora (AS Roma remake, pictured).
It’s a colour combo we know and love. Orange trims including the Lupetto, AS Roma piping with a thick, vibrant collar. Wonderful.
1. 1991/92 Home

Barilla pasta, top stuff. We’re stepping back into the early ‘90s to fill our #1 spot. Look at it, drink it in. Enjoy.
Stars of the 1991 Coppa Italia win were lucky enough to wear this kit in the next season. Völler, Rizzitelli and their captain, Giannini.
The simplicity of this shirt is what makes it great. The yellow cuffs, collar and adidas stripes work together across the clean maroon base.
The mod-style, Italian Vespa badge is sublime. It works in perfect tandem with the Lupetto crest on the sleeve.
